On June 6th, 2024, I had the privilege of speaking at Crescent University Abeokuta, Ogun State. Invited to address the annual Physics Day organized by the university’s physical science department, I delivered a talk on the topic of “PhET Simulations Aa a Tool for Understanding Physics Concepts.” The experience was exhilarating, enlightening, and immensely rewarding as I engaged with lecturers, educators, and students, highlighting the importance of fostering a greater interest in physics and STEM education among young learners. Accompanied by my colleague, Mr. Stephen, we set up roller banners to promote PhET simulations and the DTW Foundation.
My presentation focused on how PhET simulations can revolutionize the way students perceive and interact with science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) subjects. These interactive, game-like simulations are designed to make learning more engaging, helping students grasp fundamental concepts in physics, chemistry, and biology more effectively. By incorporating PhET simulations into their teaching methods, educators can capture students’ imaginations and reduce the aversion many students feel towards STEM subjects.
During my talk, I demonstrated a variety of PhET simulations, including those on parallel and series circuits. The interactive nature of these tools captivated the audience, especially the students, who eagerly participated in the Q&A sessions and were rewarded for their correct answers. The excitement in the room was palpable, with many students expressing a keen interest in exploring more simulations.
I also took the opportunity to encourage educators to delve deeper into PhET simulations and incorporate them into their teaching strategies. Additionally, I invited them to join PhET workshops organized by the DTW Foundation, where they could receive more comprehensive training on the use of these simulations. We offered our availability for in-person training sessions, further emphasizing our commitment to enhancing STEM education across Nigeria.
Moreover, I had the opportunity to be interviewed by a television broadcasting station, where I discussed the potential of PhET simulations in transforming physics education. This interview provided a broader platform to reach more educators and stakeholders, amplifying the message of innovative teaching methods. The journey from Lagos to Abeokuta, spanning approximately 217 kilometers, was quite an adventure. Along the way, I indulged in local delicacies such as corn and coconut, which added to the memorable experience.
The event was a resounding success, leaving a lasting impact on both students and educators. We look forward to seeing more educators embrace these innovative tools and join our mission to transform STEM education.
