On November 14th, 2024, we at DTW Foundation, represented by myself Mrs. Blessing Seun Chukwuka and my colleague, Mr. Praise Stephen, had the privilege of participating in a remarkable event organized by Accurate Creative Mind Foundation. This occasion marked the celebration of World Science Day, and it was aimed at fostering a love for technology and innovation among students. Held in Ogun State, approximately 180 kilometers drive from Lagos, the event was a mix of excitement and discovery for both the students and us as facilitators.
Our role at the event was to engage the students on the topic “Artificial Intelligence: Its Benefits and Ethical Considerations”. It was also a platform to interact with young minds eager to explore the limitless possibilities technology offers. As we prepared for the drive to Ogun State, our team was filled with anticipation, knowing the impact this interaction could have on these students’ lives and futures.
When we arrived, the warm reception from the organizers and students energized us. It was clear that this event was well-planned, with eager participants and a vibrant atmosphere. We began our session by demystifying Artificial Intelligence (AI) for the students, explaining its real-life applications in a way that connected with their experiences.
We shared practical examples of how AI is used, not only for tasks like doing their school homework but also for creating solutions. We encouraged the students to think beyond consuming content and explore AI’s potential to teach them how to make a cake, how to create soap, and even how to become content creators. We explained that AI tools can help them learn skills that they can monetize or use to solve everyday problems.
We also placed a strong emphasis on ethical considerations when using AI and navigating the digital space. As we spoke about the importance of privacy, we advised them to avoid sharing sensitive information like their home addresses or personal data on social media. The goal was to make them aware of the risks associated with the misuse of technology while empowering them to use it safely and responsibly.
To make our session even more engaging, we introduced the students to PhET Simulations—a powerful tool for teaching and learning science concepts interactively. Together, we explored simulations that allowed students to manipulate variables and see immediate results, making science come alive in ways that traditional methods often cannot achieve. We were thrilled to see how quickly they grasped these tools and how much fun they had experimenting with the simulations.
The most exciting part of the day was the hands-on interaction with AI tools. With the laptop we brought, we guided the students to type their questions directly into an AI interface and experience the responsiveness of this technology. For many of them, this was their first exposure to AI, and the expressions on their faces were priceless. Their excitement as they explored, learned, and interacted was a reminder of the immense potential in these young minds.
The feedback from the students and organizers was overwhelmingly positive. The students expressed amazement at how technology could be used to simplify learning and create opportunities. The organizers appreciated the effort and resources we brought to make the session impactful.
As we reflected on the event, we couldn’t help but feel proud of what we had accomplished together as a team. The students were not just passive listeners; they were active participants, eager to learn, explore, and ask questions. Their enthusiasm reaffirmed our belief that the Nigerian child—and indeed the African child—has the potential to compete with peers globally if given the right tools and opportunities.
We took memorable photos with the students and organizers, celebrating the success of the day. The journey back to Lagos was filled with discussions about how we could replicate this impact in other communities. We are deeply committed to ensuring that every child has access to the resources needed to thrive in a rapidly changing technological world.
At DTW Foundation, our mission is clear: to empower African students through technology and education. We envision a future where every child can confidently navigate the digital world, not just as consumers but as creators and innovators. This event was another step toward that vision, and it strengthened our resolve to keep pushing forward.
We remain inspired by the students’ receptiveness and determination to learn. Their bright smiles and eager questions remind us why we do what we do. Together, we will continue to advocate for better education and digital literacy, ensuring that no child is left behind.
The journey may have been 180 kilometers, but the memories, lessons, and impact made it a journey worth taking. The future is bright, and we at DTW Foundation are proud to be part of shaping it.
